Candidate Profile

Simon Peter Kiwanuka

Senior Compliance Manager  Uganda Member from 6 years

I have 11 years’ experience in banking centered around branch operations, operational risk, internal controls and compliance risk management with 2 banks i.e. Guaranty Trust Bank (U) Ltd and Stanbic bank (U) Ltd where I have been for the last 6 years.

In my current role as a Senior Compliance Manager, I am tasked to support and assist the Board and Senior Management to discharge their accountability for compliance risk management and compliance with applicable statutory, regulatory and supervisory requirements. Previously, as a Regional Operations Manager (Metro Region), I oversaw 16 Branches and my primary responsibilities involved managing the compliance, operational and reputational risks in those branches. I would spend most my time working with the Branch leaders on activities intended to minimize operational losses and improving procedural and regulatory compliance.

In my time with Stanbic I have consistently delivered on all my set deliverables and fully met all expectations in my reviews. As a branch control manager, in 2015, my branch was recognized as the best performing branch (William Street) for attaining the highest volume and value of liabilities sales with no errors. We also had the lowest operational losses, fastest turnaround time on customer inquiries and the least number of customer complaints for the period. As a Regional Operations Manager, my branches consistently passed all audits (both internal and external) and satisfactorily maintained a sound risk and control environment evidenced by none of my branches rated red by our routine monitoring teams as well as all my branches reviewed by internal audit.

I am also a member of several governance forums that are intended to support the business in enhancing internal financial controls as well as improving regulatory compliance. My presence on these committee’s avails me the opportunity to interact with different leaders of the Bank at the executive level and exposes me to how risks in other parts of the bank are mitigated. This has further aided me in enhancing my stakeholder engagement skills as well as builds my competencies.
